Rush Limbaugh, a ranting redneck disguised as an "expert" pundit, has voiced the hope that our President fails in his undertakings. Well, Mr. Limbaugh, you had better pray that doesn't happen.
What causes such hate? And, why do so many people listen to it and agree with it. I think this is another case of the "dumbing down" of American. So many people don't want to read, to listen and to think for themselves. These folks would rather have intolerant, fundie preachers and right wing, arrogant reactionaries TELL them what to think. That is such a shame. With the election of Barack Obama, I felt that our nation, as a whole, had taken a leap forward in our social, political and personal development. I now have to realize that there are many that didn't take that leap with the rest of us and are going to do all they can to pull us back.
My husband's boss is one such person. He admitted he doesn't read the newspaper or much of anything else. Yet he came into work, yesterday, ranting that Obama was going to "make the USA spend billions of dollars to pay for abortions in other countries." He obviously has not read the "Global Gag Rule" or understood what it is all about. He also spouted off about "socialized medicine" being "one step towards (insert shudder here) communism!" Funny, isn't it, that Canada and the UK haven't gone that way and they have had social healthcare in force for many years?
I still take heart that many of my brother and sister Americans have passed the stage when they see the Red Menace behind every bush and don't trust anyone who is different from them without first examining the issue. Maybe, just maybe, one day the people who are like my husband's boss, will either join in or die out.

I don't know how I came upon your blog - but I really want to read more.
I went to Bible college to major in Family Minstries and all I've really ever experienced in the church is judgement and unintelligible forceful stereotypes that hurt people and destroy lives. I'm so tired of it. I love your caption - keep your church out of our state! If the church would seek to support people and offer solutions, perhaps it would be more desirable. Meh. I think the way to help America's deficit is cut all 501c3 nonprofit giving associated with Christian organizations and we'd be golden in no time. I've watched them siphon out of the governments pockets for years to put money into their own purposes - steak dinners, red wines, and all for Jesus while telling us we're going to hell if we don't do what they want.
It's terribly sad that you were part of this EMS movement. I've been reading a lot of Arlie Hochschild and Stephanie Coontz books - Marriage a History is a very good one. It blew my mind and it discusses what you are writing about and the dscrimination against women who had children at that time and their children.
I think that Family Ministries is about supporting families where they are be it single, teens mothers, going through IVF, 2 kids, 8 kids, whatever - not creating idealistic pictures of what families should be Mom, dad two kids, once you own a house, have stable careers, have smoothed every wrinkle in your family of origin, and have perfectly trained your dog...and then admonishing the hell of people aka picking the snot of them for not accomplishing that and then exiling them from small groups and support groups in the church. Ahem, not that I'm saying I've experienced that. Really.
What you're writing about here is a specific thing that affected your life greatly - but the abuse of people in power who think they know better is something that goes on and the scenery has changed with the times. It is so devestating and ultimately to the children. It breaks my heart that people are so determined to be in control that they fight for power and shed innocent blood.
